London, United Kingdom, 26 December 2017 — Nord Gold SE (“Nordgold” or the “Company”) announces the completion of a major resettlement programme launched by the Taparko mine in Burkina Faso. The planning and implementation of the resettlement was carried out in line with the best international practice. Nordgold also continues to engage with local communities by being a reliable employer and an important tax payer to Burkina Faso. 1100 persons totally have participated in the resettlement programmes realised by Nordgold in West Africa.
Nordgold continues to demonstrate its full commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While planning our social development projects or resettlements, we always consider how we can contribute to the welfare of the local people. This resettlement has seen that the houses built are more spacious and much better quality, while the location of the village and housing design were decided based on consultations with the local community. The mine has also provided employment opportunities to local people. Oleg BazaleevHead of Internal Communications and Sustainability at Nordgold
The reason for the resettlement programme was the expansion of the Taparko mine’s operations into the Tangarsi zone, which is currently operated by the Goengo and Kangarse open pits. According to preliminary estimates, since the launch of the Tangarsi in the third quarter of 2017, it has added more than 50 koz to the mine gold resources alone.
