Moscow, Russia, 1 February 2018 — Nord Gold SE (Nordgold or the Company) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Russia) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement on environmental protection. Nordgold and WWF-Russia will collaborate to protect the environment and local biodiversity, support the areas under special environmental protection, and carry out analytical work on the environmental responsibility of businesses.
The Berezitovy mine has been operating in the Amur area for more than a decade. Apart from creating jobs in this region, we also support the local communities and protect the environment. Our partnership with WWF Russia and support of the Oriental Stork — the Winged Symbol of Amur project is the next logical step in our efforts to protect the region’s biodiversity. The Oriental stork is a rare, beautiful bird and a great indicator of low disturbance in wetlands, which are under protection worldwide as well. The Oriental stork will be the 2018 Bird of the Year in the Amur environmental region. It is therefore an honor for us to support the Fund in its research and preservation. WWF’s program «Stork’s nests keepers» exists already for 14 years. Since then a number of breeding pairs rose more than three times. A positive dynamics of the population and habitat expansion of the Oriental stork remains today. The data collected during the project will allow us to develop a wide range of environmental measures aimed at protecting the species and the northern areas of their habitat. We haven’t carried environmental activity in this area before. Partnership and cooperation with companies that work in the Far Eastern region has already proved to be effective for the stork’s conservation. Igor ChestinDirector WWF-Russia
