London, United Kingdom, 13 March 2019 — Nord Gold SE (“Nordgold” or the “Company”), the internationally diversified gold producer, announces that Oleg Bazaleev, Head of Sustainable Development, will present at the Fourth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly today.
The UN Environment Assembly is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment. It addresses the critical environmental challenges facing the world today. The theme of the Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly, held from 11-15 March 2019, is ‘Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production’.
Mr Bazaleev will explain to participants of a high-level business breakfast arranged under the aegis of the Global Compact Local Network Russia how Nordgold’s commitment to sustainable development is central to its strategy and core to its licence to operate. The Company’s extensive community development programmes in West Africa are specifically designed following consultation with the local people, with a focus on four priority themes: ‘Quality Education’, ‘Clean Water & Sanitation’, ‘Good Health’, and ‘Sustainable Cities & Communities’.
In particular, Mr Bazaleev will outline the range of community initiatives in Burkina Faso, where Nordgold now operates three large scale gold mining operations and is the country’s second largest gold producer. These include construction of new quality homes for local communities, considerable investment in new infrastructure projects including roads, schools and health centres, as well as investment into agriculture and livestock and supporting the development of small businesses. These initiatives are central to how Nordgold operates as a focal point, with its sustainable development programmes guided by the expectations and needs of the local communities.
These programmes are also directly related to helping local communities that live close to the semi-arid region of the Sahel to mitigate the impact of climate change. For example, the Tiben raw water reservoir near Nordgold’s Bissa and Bouly mines in Burkina Faso, also provides a valuable year round water source for the local communities farming activities, essential in an area impacted by climate change.
